Social media or the digital world offers us variety of opportunities to connect with people from around the world using our virtual self. It means that we do not go outside to personally talk to people but instead we use our gadgets to reach people. Everything we do and create will forever be placed permanently into the digital world. Although the digital world has a lot to offer, we always have to keep in mind how our virtual self should be in using social media and how we should protect it in terms of legal, ethical and societal issues.
In order to protect your virtual self, first, you have to make your profile private. Anyone who can access your profile will have the opportunity to get all of your information and can use it through something without even knowing. People can trash your identity and can pretend to be you. That is why make sure that you are able to also change your passwords often. Moreover, avoid posting your daily activities minute per minute through social media. What if someone wants to track you down? Then you already gave the information that they need.

In terms of the protection of the virtual self, it’s not just about privacy and stuffs but also how we present ourselves in front of other people through social media. We should be fully aware that being digitally involved comes with great responsibility. Whenever we post something on the internet, we should first evaluate the content whether it uses inappropriate language, or it uses sexually provocative languages and pictures. If so, this should not be seen in social media. Someday and somehow it may not be addressed today, but it can represent you as a person in the future. Let us always be mindful on what we post and about to say to other people’s feeds.
In dealing with certain issues, it is better to have a research if you are not knowledgeable on the said topic to come up with a better argument.
Speaking of responsibility, our virtual self should never do something illegal like distributing files or information that is under the copyright law. As a user, we must make appropriate actions. We must respect each and everyone’s right. One good example would be citing the information properly whether it may be on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and to other social media sites.

What we do on the digital world is also the representation of our real self in the outside world. Again, being digitally involved comes with great responsibility. The digital world fascinates me. It can positively impact you and it can give you so much opportunities, but it can also bring you down and destroy you for some reason. Being a user is fun yet dangerous. Virtual world is interactive but also destructive. We can control the media if we know how to control and limit ourselves in being part of the world called the social media.
WE SHOULD BUILD A WALL BETWEEN THE DIGITAL WORLD AND THE REAL WORLD.
